As a family doctor taking care of children with over 40 years of experience, I’ve seen many health trends come and go. One growing concern, however, is the impact of electromagnetic fields, or EMF, on our children. It’s not as obvious as a cut or as quantifiable as a fever, but it’s equally significant– probably more significant. Today, I want to discuss how it affects something invaluable: our children’s happiness and creativity.
Key Points
-
Children are more vulnerable to EMF exposure than adults due to their thinner skulls and developing nervous systems.
-
EMF can disrupt brain development and functioning, which could affect cognitive skills and emotional health.
-
Wireless devices, which are prevalent in children’s lives, are a major source of EMF exposure.
-
Chronic exposure to EMF may be associated with physical and mental health problems, such as sleep disorders and anxiety.
-
Taking practical measures to reduce EMF exposure can safeguard children’s health and foster their happiness and creativity.

What are Electromagnetic Fields (EMF)?
First, let’s clarify what EMF is. In simple terms, EMF is a type of energy that both natural and artificial sources emit. The sun and the Earth itself emit EMF. However, it’s the artificial sources—like cell phones, Wi-Fi routers, tablets, and even baby monitors—that are becoming increasingly concerning, particularly for our children. These devices emit both Radio Frequency (RF) and Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) radiation, which the body can absorb. While the natural sources of EMF are actually health and life giving, the artificial forms are all damaging to human physiology.
What is EMF and Where Does it Come From?
EMF, or Electromagnetic Fields, are waves of electric and magnetic energy that move together through space. They are emitted by many of the devices we use every day. Consider how many devices you have plugged in right now—your cell phone, laptop, or maybe a tablet. Each one emits EMF, creating an invisible energy field that our bodies navigate every day. If WiFi or other wireless service is driving the device the amount of energy coming off the device is much increased
Why Children Are More Vulnerable to EMF
You may be asking why I am more worried about children. It’s actually due to biology. Children have thinner skulls, which means there is less of a shield between the EMF waves and their brains that are still developing. More important thought, their nervous systems are still growing and sensitive to disruption. Their bodies have a higher water content, which makes them more conductive to some EMF, thus making them more susceptible to the effects of EMF.
The Impact of EMF Exposure on a Child’s Developing Brain
Children’s brains are truly amazing. They are quickly growing and absorbing everything from their surroundings like a sponge. This growth is delicate and can be affected by outside influences, including exposure to EMF. There is increasing evidence that EMF can interact with the cells in the brain, possibly causing changes in how these cells operate and communicate.
How EMF Interacts with Children’s Brains
On a cellular level, exposure to EMF can cause a range of biological changes. It can impact cell growth, cell signaling, and even the blood-brain barrier—a protective layer around the brain. All of these can influence how children think, learn, and feel.
Recent Studies on EMF and Its Impact on Kids’ Cognition
While research is still underway, there is growing evidence that exposure to EMF can lead to cognitive issues. Some studies indicate that children exposed to high levels of EMF may struggle with memory, attention, and problem-solving abilities. Babies exposed to EMF while in the mother’s womb have a significantly higher risk of autism so clearly their brains are at risk from this energy.
The Ubiquity of Mobile Phones and Wi-Fi Devices
The prevalence of wireless technology in our everyday lives cannot be overstated. It is omnipresent, from the schoolroom to the play area. While these devices have undoubtedly simplified some aspects of life, they have also posed new challenges in terms of safeguarding our children’s health.
Children’s Use of Devices: The Facts
Here’s a thought: an astonishing number of children get their hands on a smartphone before they’ve even become teenagers. Research indicates that by the time they’re 12, many children are spending several hours a day on these devices, frequently with minimal supervision and little awareness of the possible dangers.
Minimizing Reliance on Technology for Stimulation
This isn’t only about limiting the amount of time spent in front of screens—it’s also about being aware of the unseen dangers that come with that screen time. Encouraging children to play outside, read books, or participate in imaginative play without electronic devices not only nurtures their creativity but also decreases their exposure to EMF.
Long-Term Dangers of EMF Exposure
When it comes to the long-term dangers of EMF exposure in children, we need to consider the cumulative effect of daily, chronic exposure over many years. It’s not just about the immediate reactions—like a headache from too much screen time—but how ongoing exposure can impact a child’s development over time. When I see children in the office it is now rare for a parent to give their child a book to keep them occupied. Instead they give them a cell phone or tablet to keep them occupied. I can attest that in the age when books were being used, they were more effective not counting the downside issues of EMF.
The Impact of Constant EMF Exposure on Physical Health
Constant exposure to EMF has been linked to various health problems. Some studies, for example, suggest that there may be a connection between EMF and the development of certain types of cancer, but more research is needed to fully comprehend this link. Furthermore, exposure to EMF has been linked to sleep problems, which can significantly affect a child’s physical development and immune system.
How EMF Exposure May Influence Anxiety and Depression in Children
Children’s mental health is just as important as their physical health. Anxiety and depression, which are becoming more prevalent in children today, have been tentatively linked to EMF exposure. While the exact cause isn’t fully understood, it is believed that the disruption of natural sleep patterns and the potential for EMF to affect brain chemistry may be contributing factors.
Steps to Safeguard the Future Joy of Our Children
As a family physician, my main objective is to safeguard the health of my patients, which encompasses their future joy and creative capacity. As a result, it’s vital to take steps to prevent EMF exposure in order to safeguard our children’s futures.
How to Reduce EMF Exposure
Here are some ways to reduce EMF exposure:
-
Limit how much time children spend on electronics each day. Maybe one hour max.
-
Every 30 minutes, encourage children to take breaks from screens to give their bodies a break from EMF exposure.
-
Keep devices like cell phones and tablets away from the body—use speakerphone or text instead of holding them to the ear.
-
Turn off Wi-Fi routers at night to reduce exposure while children are sleeping.
Establishing a Home with Minimal EMF
Establishing a home with minimal EMF begins with being aware of where and how we use technology. For instance, consider the following:
-
Position beds away from walls that have electrical wiring or appliances on the other side.
-
Utilize wired connections instead of wireless whenever possible.
-
Limit the use of devices that emit EMFs in children’s bedrooms, such as cordless phones and wireless baby monitors.
Empowering Ourselves Through Knowledge and Understanding
Change begins with awareness. When we educate ourselves and our children about the possible dangers of EMF, we are able to make knowledgeable choices about how we use technology. This understanding gives us the power to push for safer environments in our homes and schools. Many schools brag about how they are a completely wireless environment with a tablet for every child. In fact, they are unwittingly undermining many children’s health.
Instilling Safe Technology Habits in Kids
It’s crucial to educate our kids about the safe use of technology. We need to let them know why excessive screen time can be detrimental and set a good example with our own tech habits. This way, we’re not just safeguarding their health, but also fostering a responsible attitude towards technology that will benefit them for a lifetime.
Fighting for safer tech standards isn’t just about preserving the health of our kids today, but also about creating a healthier tomorrow. We must lobby for laws that take into account the susceptibility of the developing minds and bodies of children and establish more stringent restrictions on EMF exposure. By banding together as a coalition of parents, teachers, and healthcare providers, we can amplify our voices and bring about change.
Commonly Asked Questions
In my line of work, I have come across many questions from worried parents about EMF and its effects on their children. I would like to answer some of the most frequently asked questions to clear up any confusion and offer some advice.
What’s the Appropriate Age for Kids to Start Using Mobile Phones?
There’s no definitive answer to this question. However, I usually suggest to parents that they should hold off until at least middle school before giving their children mobile phones, and even then, to keep a close eye on how much they use them. At this age, kids are starting to grasp the idea of moderation and the need to balance screen time with other activities. In some counties in Europe it is now illegal for children to be in possession of cell phones or other wireless devices because we are way past the idea of theory that they might be harmful. Of course the industry will have their experts to reassure that it’s all perfectly safe and don’t hold your breath for our government to actually stand in the way of the wireless industry. Their record so far is abysmal. Their motives are suspect.
Could Long-Term EMF Exposure Truly Impact a Child’s Happiness?
Although research is still being conducted, there is a worry that continuous exposure to EMF might have an effect on a child’s mood and cognitive abilities, which could, in turn, influence their happiness. These risks can be reduced by limiting exposure and encouraging a healthy lifestyle. You probably know people who are chronically unhappy because they are chronically worrying. You might be creating one right now with excessive EMF exposure.
Is it Safer for Children to Use Wired Devices Instead of Wireless Ones?
In most cases, wired devices emit less EMFs than wireless ones. So, choosing wired connections when you can could lower the amount of EMFs your child is exposed to.
How schools approach technology is key in controlling EMF exposure. Schools can contribute by:
-
Using wired internet connections instead of Wi-Fi where possible.
-
Setting up ‘tech-free’ zones or times to promote breaks from devices.
-
Offering education on the safe use of technology.
What are the Top EMF Protection Devices for Children?
This is a very complicated subject but I will just say that technology exists that has been proven to mitigate at least some of the physiologic disturbance that happens with exposure to EMF. I and my family use this ourselves. And there is some encouraging early research that a natural form of EMF called “Far Infrared” light or Terahertz Gap light may help repair damaged nerves.
It’s important to remember that protecting our children from EMF exposure isn’t about creating a fear of technology. Instead, it’s about using technology in a smart way that keeps their well-being in mind. By taking the initiative and advocating for safer environments, we can help ensure that our children grow up to be happy, healthy, and full of creative spirit.
EMF exposure is a complicated issue, but as a family doctor, I believe it’s one we can’t turn a blind eye to. By understanding the risks, taking practical steps to minimize exposure, and advocating for safer technology use, we can help protect our children’s health, happiness, and creative potential. If we work together to create a brighter, healthier future for all our children we will have happier and more creative children.
